    California Fractional gold pieces were minted in the Old West by private jewelers because of the high demand for coinage in San Francisco. The US government was not able to satisfy the large demand for smaller denomination coinage as they were focused on the higher denomination gold pieces. This is a lovely example of this extremely popular Washington head type, which is always in demand by California Fractional gold collectors.
